Marine Loading Arm Monday – Atlanta

It’s time for this month’s edition of Marine Loading Arm Monday! In this mini-series, we’ve been exploring our newest product line launched earlier this year. Our first edition covered the Barca, our manual marine loading arm, while the second focused on the Minerva, a semi-self-supporting option. Today, in our second-to-last edition, we’ll be diving into the Atlanta, our final offering in the series.

About the Atlanta Marine Loading Arm:

The Atlanta Marine Loading Arm, like all our marine arms, efficiently transfers liquid or gaseous products, including harsh chemicals, to and from ocean-going or inland waterway vessels. This hydraulically operated arm features a unique separate support structure balanced by a cable pantograph system with two counterweights. This design excels at handling a wide operating range.

The support structure and product pipe are typically constructed from durable carbon steel, although stainless steel is also an option for the product pipe. The pantograph system with its two counterweights ensures consistent balance between the inboard and outboard arms throughout their movement, maintaining a uniform nominal bore across the entire loading arm. This lightweight system requires minimal maintenance.

Replacing seals on a large loading arm might seem like a daunting task. However, the Atlanta’s design allows for easy replacement without dismantling the arm or using additional equipment. The same ease of access applies to the Model 4-2ST Swivel Joint (a sandwich-style design) if it ever needs servicing.

Available in sizes ranging from 6″ to 16″, the Atlanta Marine Loading Arm is ideal for high and low-temperature and pressure applications.

What are the advantages of a fully supported structure:
  • Improved Stability: The separate support structure takes the weight of the arm itself off the jetty or platform, reducing the stress on that structure. This is especially important for larger or heavier loading arms, or for those that need to handle particularly heavy or volatile cargo.
  • Easier Balancing: The two independent counterweights, adjusted via the cable pantograph system, allow for more precise balancing of the arm throughout its entire range of motion. This is crucial for smooth operation and can help to prevent accidents during loading and unloading.
  • Versatility: The separate support structure allows for a wider range of motion for the arm itself. This can be helpful when accommodating ships of different sizes or configurations.
  • Reduced Maintenance: The cable pantograph system itself is a low-maintenance solution compared to other balancing mechanisms like wire ropes. This translates to significant time and cost savings on inspections and repairs.

Overall, marine loading arms with separate support structures, balanced by cable pantograph systems with two counterweights, provide an excellent balance of stability, ease of use, and lower maintenance requirements.
