How to…. Safely use and Maintain your Engineered Swivel Joints

Welcome to another edition of our “How To…” series! Today, we’re focusing on a crucial component in many industrial applications: Engineered Swivel Joints. These versatile marvels allow for fluid flow while enabling rotation, making them essential in everything from construction equipment to chemical processing plants. But like any hardworking machine, proper maintenance is key to ensuring their longevity and safety.

This guide will equip you with the knowledge to keep your Engineered Swivel Joints functioning smoothly and reliably. We’ll cover essential maintenance procedures, safety precautions to remember, and tips for maximising the lifespan of these vital components. So, whether you’re a seasoned operator or just starting out, this guide is here to help you get the most out of your Engineered Swivel Joints.

Safety Instructions:

Whether you’re a seasoned engineer or just starting out with Swivel Joints, here’s a handful of safety procedures to keep in mind…

  • Intended Use Only: Operate the Swivel Joint only for its designed purposes.
  • Qualified Personnel: Only trained and authorised personnel should assemble, operate, and maintain the Swivel Joint.
  • Safety First: Perform all installation, maintenance, and operation tasks carefully, following all necessary safety precautions.
  • Maintain Integrity: Do not modify or alter the swivel joint without written permission from EWFM, as this can lead to damage and reduced performance.
  • Pre-Use Inspection: Before each use, inspect the Swivel Joint for any signs of wear or damage to ensure proper operation.
  • Damaged Joints: If you discover a damaged Swivel Joint, remove it from service immediately.
  • Reporting Changes: Maintenance personnel must promptly report any safety-related changes to the Swivel Joint to the operating company.
  • Documentation: Always follow all safety instructions provided in the accompanying documentation.
Maintenance Instructions:

Following the provided maintenance instructions meticulously is crucial to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your swivel joint, minimising the risk of costly downtime.

  • Our Engineered Swivel Joints come pre-lubricated for their intended operating conditions and typically do not require grease fittings as standard.
  • Grease fittings can be added as an optional extra if needed.
  • Relubricate the Swivel Joint only after a visual inspection of the existing lubricant confirms it’s strictly necessary.
  • To inspect the lubricant, remove the plug. Do not remove any ball bearings during this process.

How to…. Safely use and Maintain your Engineered Swivel Joints

  • In case of leakage due to seal wear or any other identified fault, immediately take the Swivel Joint out of service for inspection and repair.
  • Refer to EWFM’s dismantling and assembly instructions (available upon request) to repair the Joint in your workshops. Remember to relubricate the Swivel Joint during repairs.
  • Use either our recommended lubricant or a suitable alternative for the specific operating conditions.
  • Ensure complete removal of old lubricant before relubrication. Follow the grease manufacturer’s specifications (available upon request) if not provided by your company.
  • Replace the sealing system only if leakage occurs, not at predetermined intervals.

Following these steps provides a two-fold benefit: protecting your workers and ensuring optimal performance of your engineered Swivel Joints, minimising downtime.
