Tonight’s the night! It’s time to get dressed up in your scary costumes, its time to carve your pumpkins, it’s time to get spooky because its Halloween.
Halloween is celebrated on the 31st of October in many parts of the world. Some get into it more than others (Did you know one quarter of all candy sold annually is the US is purchased for Halloween). The question is though, why do we do it?
The name Halloween comes from the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day but the traditions may have originated from ancient Celtic harvest festivals and particularly the Gaelic festival of Samhain, all of which probably had pagan roots.
The festival called Samhain marked the end of summer and harvest and the beginning of the dark cold winter. Celts believed on this day the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred and ghosts of the dead returned to ruin crops, cause trouble and spread death in the coming months. This all seems very deep and nowadays we take this a bit more light-heartedly but it’s the reason why we all put on scary costumes and light bonfires and pumpkins, the idea being to scare the unwanted ghosts away!
