Autumnal Equinox

Autumn has finally arrived. From late September until the 21st of December, the northern hemisphere will start to experience shorter daylight during the day and temperatures will start to cool. Another name for autumn is the autumnal equinox. This is an astronomical event that marks the start of autumn or fall. During the equinox, the sun crosses over the celestial equator. This is an imaginary extension of the Earth’s equator line. The event occurs when the Sun’s centre passes through this line.

One of the more notable signs that autumn is arriving is the turning of leaves on trees. The shorter days that this season brings are a sign for trees to begin to prepare for winter. Due to the lack of light during winter, photosynthesis can not occur. Trees will then start the process of shutting down their food production systems, which reduces the amount of chlorophyll in their leaves. Chlorophyll is the chemical which keeps the leaves green. Flavonoids, carotenoids, and anthocyanins take over as this decreases. These chemicals give the leaves their vibrant autumn colours.
