Movember 2021: What we did and how much we raised

Throughout November, three members of the EWFM team have been taking part in Movember. Movember is the leading charity that is changing the face of men’s health. It started in Australia in 2003 when two friends got 30 mates to take up the challenge. It has since expanded on a global scale, with over 6 million Mo Bros and Mo Sisters now taking part from 20 countries.

Taking on mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer, Movember exists to help men live happier, healthier, and longer lives. They are uniquely placed to address this health crisis on a global scale. By funding ground-breaking projects all over the world, engaging men to understand what works best and accelerate change.

Every year, individuals can support Movember in a variety of ways. This includes growing a moustache, moving for Movember (moving a minimum of 60km for the 60 men we lose to suicide each hour, every hour across the globe), hosting an event, or simply creating your own challenge.

What the EWFM team did:

Guy Curtis, Ben Adamson, and Mike Phillips all took on the challenge and have all been attempting to grow their moustaches (some with greater success than others). They have also each moved a minimum of 60k throughout the month, with all achieving this in different ways. From taking long walks every lunchtime to completing a local half marathon, it’s been a great effort by all three of them.

On the last day of November, the team had raised over £975, which had smashed the target the company had set at the start of the month of £300. However, on the morning of December 1st, we had a late donation to take our total donations to £1030. It’s a fantastic achievement from the EWFM team, and the money raised will go a long way towards raising awareness of men’s health.

Next year we will go again, but bigger and better!

National Beer Day

Did you know that the UK celebrated its National Beer Day this week?  This is an annual celebration held on 15th June each year and it celebrates all beer including traditional ales, mainstream lagers, and limited edition craft beer and everything in between no matter where it is brewed or who owns the brewing company.

June 15th is significant because that is also the date Magna Carta was sealed in 1215. The great charter mentions ale in Article 35.

‘Let there be throughout our kingdom a single measure for wine and a single measure for ale and a single measure for corn…..’

Beer was as important to our ancestors 800 years ago as it remains today.  In fact beer today is the third most commonly consumed drink in the world after water and tea.

Beer sales were down 10% in 2020 due to the closure of pubs caused by the COVID 19 pandemic.  However with the European Football Championships currently taking place and three of our home nations taking part the Industry is set for a much needed boost over the coming month.  Last weekend for example it was expected that 10m pints of beer would be drunk during the England v Croatia game on its own and £400m would be spent over the weekend.  We have all seen the images of beers being thrown in the air when joyous fans celebrate a goal being scored.

At EWFM we support Breweries all across the globe.  As we discussed in our recent blogs opening up, Do you have a safety concern & Keeping our customer safer at heights we can support you with Loading Arms, Cask Filling Equipment, Hose, Swivel Joints, Gantry Stands and Folding Step Units.  All units come with FDA approved seals where required.

Some great examples of how we have tailored our products for Breweries include,

  • Clean in Place (CIP) Loading Arms
  • Sample valves
  • C02 lines to keep it fresh
  • Extra-long lances to avoid foaming when top filling

Site visits are available to discuss the best solution for you when required, so if you work in a Brewery and would like to see how we can support your business then get in touch with Guy and Mike in our Sales Team to discuss your requirement and they will be delighted to help, wherever you are in the world.

Opening Up

Opening Up

England entered a national lockdown in December last year.  Since then, the Covid situation has improved drastically with the vaccination roll out booming.  Boris then laid out small steps on a plan to freedom.  The latest of these stages was just over a week ago.  England are now aloud to eat and drink inside with a group of up to 6 people.  This is great news for our hospitality industry for whom have had a tough year.  The majority of pubs and restaurants can now open their doors for the public.  But what will this mean?

Supply chains will now be tested.  Many in the Drinks industry have laid partly or fully dormant waiting for the pubs to open.  Going from zero to full production will be a test that I am sure they will welcome.

So how can EWFM help?

Engineered Delivery NozzlesLoading Arms

Many in the beer industries are still carrying hose to their tankers.  This is hard and demanding for their operators.  Maybe more so after this break in production.  I am sure we all want to protect their backs and therefore a loading arm is a perfect solution.  Not only does it keep your hose off the floor but it is much more clean.  We also install our loading arms with breakaway coupling which in the event of a drive away accident save costly damage.

Cask and Drum Filling Equipment

We largely help the Whisky industry already, but many drinks before bottling are stored in drums and casks.   We are familiar with many who simply still use a hose.  The problem with this, if the operator isn’t paying attention, there is no prevention of overfilling.  This can mean much product is wasted which over time can be costly for your business.  As demand now increases the chances for error is only on the up too.  Use our Automatic Filling Nozzles or Drum Filling head to put your mind at easy.

Hose

One we don’t really need to explain.  EWFM offer a large variety of food grade hose to help transfer fluids to their required location.  In the food industry cleanliness is paramount, EWFM will ensure the right hose is being used for the job.

Swivel Joints

Do you need articulation pipework in your plant?  Do you need to reduce stress or torsion on a hose?  Look no further, EWFM offer huge selection of Swivel Joints for your every need.  With Tri Clamp and RJT fitting, polished interiors, and food grade seals.  Our swivel joints will comply with your food grade standard.

I guess the message for this blog is to be prepared.  The industry will hopefully go boom in the coming weeks, so be ready for the high demand.  Don’t cut corners and ensure everything is in place to protect both your plant and operators.

We always work together with you to ensure your satisfaction throughout the process, so get in touch with us today and start to build your long-term relationship with us, so we can help your business grow and operate safely.

Keeping our customer safe at heights

At EWFM we are proud to supply a great range of Access Systems that are designed to keep your staff and operators safe when working from height.  These include Folding & Mobile Step Units, Folding Platforms and Gantries.  All of our units are manufactured here in the UK, from galvanised mild steel to BS 729, and designed for long lasting durability in harsh environments.

This was evident recently when we were approached by a valued customer who had previously purchased step units from ourselves 10+ years ago.  So impressed they had been with the quality of operation, and the condition they remain in today that when they were looking for a unit for a new project on their site, we were their first point of call.

Our step units are available,

  • In manual and pneumatic setups
  • 2 to 5 steps (up to 7 for pneumatic units)
  • 800mm to 1200mm step widths as standard (wider available on request)
  • Optional safety cage available (various sizes and heights available on request.

Along with our range of folding stairs we also offer gantries and platforms and have installed these in many sites for our customers.

Whether you are designing a complete new facility or looking to make upgrades to existing setups our standard and bespoke solutions will help you achieve your plans.  Site visits can be offered where required (in a Covid secure way) to discuss your requirements and discuss designs.  Please discuss further with our sales team.

Burns Night

Burns Night

Today, many Scotish people will be celebrating Burns Night, after Robert (Rabbie) Burns, who is widely regarded to be the National Poet of Scotland.  Burns night has been celebrated now for over 200 years having originally been marked in 1801 when nine of Robert Burns’ closest friends got together to mark the fifth anniversary of his death. The night was such a success they decided to hold it again the following year (this time in honour of his birthday) beginning the tradition that has been enjoyed by millions of people every year from then until today.

It is a day that combines haggis, whisky and poetry with lots of fun and laughter and whether they are in Scotland or further afield, with over 1000 Burns Clubs across the world, many of our friends will be looking forward to their Burns Supper (however different the celebrations may be this year).

Consuming whisky is one of the main traditions of Burns Night and here at EWFM we have been supporting many whisky distilleries both in Scotland and across the world with our Engineered Delivery Nozzles and Loading Arms being used within their production lines. They are perfect for filling casks and with their long lifespan, have been great cost effective solutions. Many may have been used to make the whisky you drink this Burns Night.

We take great pride in the way we work together with you to ensure your satisfaction throughout the process, so get in touch with us today and start to build your long-term relationship with us, so we can help your business grow and operate safely.

Keep Warm this Winter

Keep Warm This Winter

We are fast approaching the coldest months of the year here in the UK.  We’ve already witnessed our first frosts of the year and bobble hats are becoming a much more frequent sight.  This then begs the question of what will you do to keep warm this winter?  I know I’ll be hoping for a new warm coat under the tree this Christmas.

We humans aren’t the only ones who don’t like the cold though.  Throughout the year we come across fluids that also like to keep warm.  Some examples of the include

  • Bitumen
  • Chocolate
  • Molasses
  • Sulphur

All whom, if not kept wrapped up warm, become solid and don’t want to move.  Yes, they almost throw a tantrum like a teenager.  At EWFM we don’t sell woolly hats and gloves but what we can do is keep your products warm.

The first way we do this is with Jackets.  I hope you’re not sitting there thinking about a loading arm or a Swivel Joint with a puffer jacket on.  Although following a similar principle our jacketed loading arms and Swivels are best described as ‘being in a sleeve’.  You have a standard loading arm or Swivel in the centre which will carry your media.  You then have another arm (the jacket) surrounding this which is fed with hot oil or gas.  In turn the hot media surrounds your product and keeps it warm.  The temperature the oil is pumped at can vary subject to the temperature at which you wish to keep your product at.  We have made Swivels and loading arms to sustain temperatures of over 200 degree C. (Below shows some example of our jacketed arms)

The second way we keep your product warm is through Electrically tracing.  Simply ‘plug and play’.  The arm is traced with electric coils that generate heat to the desired temperature.  Electric tracing is ideal where there is no possibility of a hot gas or oil line.   They also tend to be light and more ergonomic to use.  This isn’t something you should attempt to keep you warm at home! (below shows some examples of our Electrically traced arms)

Should you have an application that needs to keep warm this winter please do get in touch with us today by:

Fireworks Night

Also known as The Gunpowder Plot and named after Guy Fawkes who, because of his military experience, was put in charge of the explosives.

We have a small connection to the Gunpowder Plot in that the offices of EWFM happen to be located in the Stables of the Hunting Lodge of King James 1. The Gunpowder Plot failed because Lord Mounteagle, who also lived in Royston, alerted King James 1 to his planned Assassination and the plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

Due to its incendiary properties and the amount of heat and gas volume that it generates, gunpowder was widely used as a propellant in firearms, artillery, rocketry, and pyrotechnics, including use as a blasting agent for explosives in quarrying, mining, and road building.

In the 16th Century there was very little in the way of health and safety so they were very lucky not to have blown themselves up having very little idea of how to handle, move and store chemicals. Luckily, we do. And like Lord Mounteagle can prevent possible disasters occurring!

Here at EWFM we can supply you with:
Breakaways to prevent accidental spillages
Loading Arms to move chemicals into tankers
Drum Fillers and Nozzles to transfer chemicals into drums for storage
• Hopefully you know about out hardened Swivels for mining

Top Tips for Top Filling

With the HSE officer becoming more and more stringent on operator well being and safety, today more than ever, we need to ensure we are prepared. In this short “Top Tips” guide, I am going to advise what equipment EWFM has to offer to help working from heights.

Top Tips for Top Filling 1Gantry Stands

First things first, how are we going to access the roofs of road or rail tankers? EWFM provide custom built designs to suit your requirements. Send us your operating layout, we will then design and send a drawing for approval. Our Gantry stands are made out of galvanised steel, include handrails, anti-slip flooring and steps. They are the safest way to reach that next level.

Folding Stairs

Now we have reached the top of the tanker it’s time to access the manhole on the roof. EWFM’s Folding stairs are ideal for this application. With hydraulic and pneumatic designs, they can be easily lowered down into place. The design allows the folding stairs to be stopped in any position meaning it can accommodate a range of tanker heights. Did you know that falling from heights is the most common cause of injury in a workplace? That’s why with all our folding stairs we strongly advise them being fitted with a safety cage. This prevents the chance of your operator falling from height and also makes them feel at ease.

Top Loading Arms

It’s now time to fill your tanker. After putting in the effort to get here safely and easily we don’t want to ruin it with the final process. Don’t make your operator lug a hose onto the tanker to begin filling, use an EWFM spring balanced loading arm. Our loading arms are designed in numerous configurations to make the filling process quick, safe and easy. With numerous Swivel Joints and Spring Balanced Cylinders they are designed to be almost weightless for operator use. Simply grab the ergonomic handles and pull the loading arm into position to begin filling. Of course, we also provide this as a completely pneumatic process should you want to remove the need for operator handling.

Overfill Protection

Everything is in place leading to the filling process, it’s quick, safe and easy, however, there is one more hurdle we need to think about. Once filling begins the last danger we face is overfilling. The operator may get distracted or begin to daydream and there’s chance for an overfilling scenario. This can make a right mess of your tanker bay or even potentially cause harm when dealing with aggressive medias. The quick fix here is to install an overfill protection device on the loading arm. This sends a signal for the pump to automatically cut off in the event the fluid reaches the top of the tanker. Of course, we can also provide vapour recovery to protect the operator from the fumes on request.

These are our “Top Tips” for a seamless and safe top filling process.

We always work together with you to ensure your satisfaction throughout the process, so get in touch with us today and start to build your long-term relationship with us, so we can help your business grow and operate safely.
