Understanding Drum Filling Heads: Features & Add-Ons

Drum filling is a routine task across many industrial operations, including chemical processing, fuel storage, water treatment and manufacturing. At first glance, it seems simple: fill the drum, seal it and move on. In reality, drum filling is one of the highest-risk areas of bulk liquid handling.

Using the wrong equipment can lead to spills, vapour exposure, inaccurate fills and safety incidents. These issues waste time, increase costs and put operators at risk. An engineered Drum Filling Head helps eliminate these problems.

A high-quality Drum Filling Head delivers controlled, safe and efficient liquid transfer. With the right features and add-ons, you can tailor the system to suit your specific operation. Understanding these options helps improve safety, efficiency and compliance.

Key Features & Add-Ons of the Drum Filling Heads

Our engineered Drum Filling Heads support safe and flexible liquid transfer. You can select a standard design or customise it with additional features.

Standard Design

The standard Drum Filling Head includes everything required for reliable day-to-day operation:

  • Product and Vapour Ports – Allow controlled filling while managing vapours safely.
  • Level Sensor Port – Ensures consistent fill volumes and prevents overfilling.
  • Material Options – Available in Hastelloy, Stainless Steel, or PTFE-Lined designs to suit a wide range of chemical and industrial applications.

Optional Add-Ons

For more specialised applications, you can enhance your Drum Filling Head with::

  • Automatic Shut-Off Systems – While common in most of our Drum Filling Heads, they can be omitted if not required.
  • Extended Lances – Helps reach the bottom of taller drums or hard to access containers, reducing splash, foaming and improving accuracy.
  • Compensators – Attached at the base to manage uneven drum bottoms for a smoother fill.
  • Nitrogen Purge Connections – Allows nitrogen to safely remove flammable gases present in the container during filling, reducing the risk of ignition.
  • IBC Adaptors – Allow filling of multiple container types with the same filling head.

By combining standard features with the right add-ons, you can tailor your Drum Filling Head to meet site-specific safety, operational and compliance requirements. This approach reduces spills, limits operator exposure and improves efficiency.

Putting Features Into Action: A Recent Project Example

At the end of 2025, we supplied 11 Drum Emptying Heads and 3 IBC Filling Heads to a leading pharmaceutical company.

The Drum Emptying Heads included extended lances with PTFE compensators, which managed uneven drum bottoms and ensured full product recovery. The IBC Filling Heads used IBC adaptors to create a gas-tight connection and Liquiphant proximity switches to prevent overfilling.

We manufactured all 14 heads from Hastelloy to provide strong chemical resistance and durability for demanding pharmaceutical applications.

This project shows how the right combination of features and add-ons improves safety, accuracy and operational efficiency.

Choosing the right Drum Filling Head improves safety, efficiency and reliability. When you understand the available features and add-ons, you can select a system that suits your liquids, containers and site requirements.

As this project demonstrates, combining options such as extended lances, PTFE compensators, IBC adaptors and safety sensors helps streamline operations, protect personnel and maximise product recovery.fety sensors, can streamline operations, protect personnel, and maximise product recovery.
