The Olympic Motto:
The original Olympic motto consists of three Latin words: “Citius, Altius, Fortius,” which translate to “Faster, Higher, Stronger.” This motto was first articulated by Henri Didon at a school sports event in 1881. Inspired by Didon’s words, Pierre de Coubertin, a founder of the modern Olympic Games, adopted the motto in 1894 to embody the spirit of the Olympic Movement. It reflects not only the pursuit of athletic and technical excellence but also the moral and educational values inherent in the Games.
In 2021, the International Olympic Committee updated the motto to recognise the unifying power of sport and the importance of solidarity. The revised motto now includes the word “Communiter,” which means “Together” in English.
