The finals of the Australian Open are this coming Sunday, and it’s been a tournament full of shocks and old faces having a resurgence.
About the tournament:
The Australian Open is one of the most prestigious tennis competitions, as it is one of the four major grand slams alongside the US and French Opens and Wimbledon. First held in 1905, it was previously called the Australasian Championships before attaining its current name in 1969. It is currently the most attended Grand Slam event out of the current four, with an estimated 810,000 attending the tournament each year.
Previous winners of the women’s competitions included newly retired Ashleigh Barty in the singles bracket and Barbora Krejková and Kateina Siniaková in the women’s doubles bracket. For the men’s singles, the most decorated Australian Open champion, Novak Djokovic, is the current holder of the title, while homegrown players Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios are holders of the doubles title. The latter, who is widely known for his sometimes strange antics on the tennis court, had to pull out of this year’s competitions due to a knee injury, but that hasn’t stopped him from giving his opinions on the tournament.
